Mike Leach is a popular American college football coach and is currently the head coach at Mississippi State University. Previously, he was the head coach at Texas Teck University from 2000 to 2009, and from 2012 to 2019, he was at Washington State University. The 61-year-old is also a two-time national coach of the year and three-time conference coach of the year.
He has been in the headlines because on Sunday (December 11), he was hospitalized for a personal health issue that happened at his home in Starkville. At first, he was treated at a local hospital, later he was sent to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Sports Illustrated, that evening, reported that Leach was in “critical” condition.

Leach was born on March 9, 1961, to Frank and Sandra Leach in Susanville, California. The Leach family was always on the move due to Frank’s job as a forester. The family finally settled in Cody, Wyoming.
Leach attended Cody High School and played football there. He graduated from the school in 1979. After that, he went to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. As he couldn’t play college football after an ankle injury that he sustained in high school, he focused on rugby after that.
He graduated from college in 1983 and five years later, he earned a Master’s of Sports Science in sports coaching in 1988.
The 61-year-old started his coaching career as an assistant at Cal Poly in 1987, and at College of the Desert in 1988. One year later, he became the head coach of the Pori Bears in the American Football Association of Finland.
In 1989, he developed the famous air raid offense with Hal Humme. Later, he joined the Oklahoma staff that was under Bob Stoops. He joined Texas Tech in 2000 and was fired in 2009. He joined Washington State University in 2012 and stayed there till 2019. There he recorded the third-most wins of any coach in school history. He joined his current team Mississippi State in 2020. His career record is 155-106.
