Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian raised his concern for the black women suffering from maternal health crises. He reacted to the shocking news of the death of Olympic gold medalist Tori Bowie who was found dead at her home in Winter Garden, Florida on May 2, and her autopsy revealed she was pregnant at the time of death.
Bowie won three Olympic medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil. She finished second in the 100-meter race and third in the 200-meter race. She was also part of the 4*100 relay race gold medal-winning team. Then next year, she went on to win two gold medals (100 meters and 4*100 relay) at the World Championships in London.
This year in May, after she was found dead at her home in Florida, the cause of her death was not known at the time. The autopsy revealed that she was eight months pregnant and was also undergoing labor at the time of her death. However, it’s not yet known the real cause of her death. But as per officials, the 32-year-old must have suffered from respiratory distress and eclampsia (which is when a person develops high blood pressure during pregnancy).
“Eclampsia typically occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy. It’s rare and affects less than 3% of people with preeclampsia. Eclampsia can cause complications during pregnancy and requires emergency medical care,” Cleveland Clinic said as per USA Today. “There is a #BlackMaternalHeathCrisis in America,” Ohanian wrote on Twitter.
He had previously tweeted about how the nation is in crisis as they failing black women despite normalizing education, wealth etc. because the problem is systemic.
“America, this is a crisis. And we’re failing Black women the worst (the disparity between race & ethnicity also exists when you normalize for education, wealth, etc because it’s systemic),” Ohanian tweeted.
