Joel Embiid scores 47 points as the Sixers defeat the Nuggets and Jokic 126-119.

Nine times this season and 35 times in his career, Embiid has scored 40 or more points.

The Philadelphia 76ers defeated Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets 126-119 on Saturday to extend their winning streak to seven games. Joel Embiid emerged as the MVP front-runner with 47 points and 18 rebounds.

Over the previous two seasons, Jokic and Embiid came in first and second place in the NBA Most Valuable Player voting. At the halfway point of this season, both are among the leading contenders for MVP. Tobias Harris scored all 14 of his points in the second half after being shut down by Denver’s defence in the first half, while James Harden finished with 17 points and 13 assists.

For Denver, which has dropped three of its previous four games, Jokic scored 24 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Michael Porter scored 20 points, and Jamal Murray contributed 22.

The Nuggets started the day with the second-best team field goal percentage (50.7%) and the highest 3-point percentage (39.5%). They dominated Philadelphia’s perimeter defence in the first half by shooting 65.9% (29 for 44) from the field and 10 of 17 (58.8%) from beyond the arc. The Nuggets led 73-58 at halftime thanks to their strong shooting. Joel Embiid began to take control toward the end of the third quarter. Putting up a 16-point quarter on 5-of-6 shooting that served as the catalyst for a 14-0 run. That allowed the Sixers to pull within 99-98 early in the fourth.

Philadelphia defeated a Nuggets squad that was in its penultimate game of a three-game, week-long trip in the fourth quarter. With more than a minute to go, P.J. Tucker added a tip-in after Harden missed a 3-point attempt to increase the margin to five. Then, Joel Embiid made a 3-pointer to reestablish an eight-point advantage.
