Friday’s 115-112 victory over the Dallas Mavericks by the under-manned Chicago Bulls was fueled by double-doubles from Coby White and Nikola Vucevic. The outcome crushed the Mavericks’ chances of competing in the Western Conference play-in tournament. Dallas Mavericks played without Kyrie Irving, Tim Hardaway Jr., Christian Wood, Josh Green, and Maxi Kleber. Despite trailing the Oklahoma City Thunder by one game for the final play-in berth in the West entering the evening.
Notwithstanding, the front office and other media representatives’ spin. It was obvious from the start that the Dallas Mavericks’ season would end in failure. Nobody anticipated how much of a flop it would be, though. The Dallas Mavericks won’t have missed the playoffs since the 2018–19 campaign. And future Hall of Famer Luka Doncic will look back on it as a season lost. Chicago Bulls end Dallas Mavericks’ chances of making the playoffs
The Dallas Mavericks led by double digits despite the change when youngster Jaden Hardy made a half-court shot just before the halftime horn for a 67-54 advantage after Markieff Morris scored 13 points in the second quarter. Morris and Hardy didn’t play in the second half and Dallas’ lineup. Primarily made up of players who spent the season at the back of the bench. And gave up the lead, but managed to keep the game close.
Dallas Mavericks closed the gap to one point, with 39 remaining after McKinley Wright IV’s basket. But Dalen Terry scored with 23 remaining after White’s alley-oop dunk. Dallas had three more chances to tie the game with a three-pointer in the closing seconds. But Theo Pinson missed a possible game-tying shot. After a disappointing season, what comes next for the Mavs?
Nobody knows what the Dallas Mavericks will do after being eliminated from playoff contention. After making it to the Western Conference Finals last year until their catastrophic collapse this season, the Mavericks have made some baffling choices.
The Mavs management decided to stop the season early to improve the team’s prospects of keeping this year’s first-round pick, as opposed to maintaining their hopes for the final play-in place in the Western Conference leading into the final game of the season. The Mavs have the 10th-best odds in the NBA Draft Lottery, which begins on May 16. This is due to the loss.
Even Dallas Mavericks’ harshest skeptics could not have predicted that the team would be so awful that it wouldn’t even qualify for the play-in round when the Mavs lost Jalen Brunson to free agency last summer. A long list of issues marred the Mavs’ season, including unlucky and untimely injuries, a serious lack of depth brought on by the front office’s offseason moves, fragile chemistry, dubious coaching choices, and much more.
With so much uncertainty and chaos swirling around it, can the Mav’s front office survive? We won’t know the answer for a few months. But compared to the previous offseason, it seems like they’re at least going to try harder to make something important happen this time. It will be simpler to say than to do.
