The 2014–2020 Mercedes F1 team was a complete beast. They won both championships for seven consecutive years, and Lewis Hamilton played a major role. Hamilton won six championships and almost won the 2021 championship. Whereas the one championship was won by Hamilton’s former teammate Nico Rosberg in 2016, who retired after that season. From 2017 to 2021, Finnish racing driver Valtteri Bottas partnered with Hamilton in the Mercedes seat.
Later in 2022, Bottas joined Alfa Romeo and is still racing for them. Recently, in an interview, he was asked about his experience racing for Mercedes alongside Hamilton. Here is what Valtteri Bottas replied:
“I was in denial for almost five years!”
The complete statement:
“I was in denial for almost five years because every year, I wanted to get back to the season and then fight for the title, and I had to believe in myself. With Lewis, only in the last year could I accept to myself that in equal machinery throughout a full season, I really struggled to beat him and that he is probably better in certain areas.”
All ten races that Bottas has won in his F1 career came with Mercedes. Also, his best championship finish of second came with them. He did struggle, but he wasn’t a failure for them. He played a major role in all their campaigns and was one of the main reasons they won constructors championships from 2017 to 2021.
