Chelsea announced on Friday that it had extended veteran defender Thiago Silva’s one-year deal through the summer of 2024. After leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, Silva, 38, initially signed a one-year contract with Chelsea on a free transfer. Later, in 2021 and 2022, he agreed to extensions of one year each.
Positive negotiations had taken place earlier this week, and a deal was almost reached. Silva’s experience is seen as an essential part of the team’s development under head coach Graham Potter despite Chelsea’s policy of signing younger players to long-term contracts.
Silva has been a pillar of Chelsea’s defence despite his advanced age, particularly during their run to the Champions League championship in 2021.
Thiago Silva has started 18 of Chelsea’s 21 Premier League games this season despite significant changes on and off the field. Additionally, he was a member of the Brazilian team that advanced to the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals. Read More: Manchester United is Expecting a Massive takeover bid from QatarÂ
Thiago Silva happy to extend contract
“I am honestly so happy to continue my career with the Blues,” the Brazil international said.
“When I signed my first contract here, it was to just do one year. Now it is already the fourth! I could not have imagined that, but really it is a very special moment for me to sign and stay at Chelsea.”
“We’re delighted that Thiago has decided to continue with Chelsea,” chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said.
“He’s a world-class talent, as he’s proven over many years for club and country, and his experience, quality and leadership skills are vital to our vision going forward.
“We’re thrilled he has extended his contract with us and we look forward to more success with him ahead!”
