“Premier League teams are bad at defending!” says Argentine manager Diego Simone

The English Premier League is considered one of the richest and most competitive. All 20 teams in the league are renowned football clubs, and several have clinched the title multiple times. Every matchday produces numerous thrilling contests. Well, Argentine manager Diego Simone has released a statement that is quite controversial.

Diego Simone said:

“Premier League teams are bad at defending.”

In case you missed: “I am so proud of this club!” says Pep Guardiola

Here is the complete statement by Simone on the Premier League:

“You watch English football, and there are 4-4, 6-3 games… but no one defends! I see it, and I think that no one defends.”

“I think that if I can defend well and approach them in attack, I can become a champion. Barcelona became champion last year because of a solid defense.”

Simone is correct. Every matchday rarely produces clean sheet games, and often we see multiple scoring games.

Last season, except for Manchester City and Newcastle, every team had an average of at least one goal conceded per game. Moreover, as the standings go down, the average increases from one to two.

On the other hand, half of the Premier League teams have an average of two goals scored per game in the season. Clearly, defending is a weak point for most of the Premier League teams, but they also have a strong attack.
