Jorginho of Chelsea has signed with Arsenal on an 18-month deal, meeting the deadline day requirement. After two offers were made to Brighton star Moises Caicedo, but they were rejected, the Italian international became an unexpected target.
But Brighton turned down both offers, forcing the Premier League’s top team to make a quick move for Jorginho. With just hours left in the transfer window, Mikel Arteta, who had been interested in signing a midfielder, struck a £12 million deal to bring the Italian to the Emirates Stadium.
Martin Zubimendi, Youri Tielemans, and Amadou Onana were also under consideration, but none of those moves appeared feasible for Arsenal.
The Arsenal manager has long been a fan of Jorginho and was interested in signing him as early as 2020. Chelsea was happy to approve the deal, and the player will be free to leave this summer. Read More: Hakim Ziyech’s move from Chelsea to Paris Saint-Germain could be in Jeopardy
What did Jorginho say after joining Arsenal?
In a statement, he said: “I’ll try to just bring positive energy, hard work and my experience to help the team. It’s what I always bring with me.
“I try just to help with the experience I’ve had in my time with the other clubs and anything I can do just to help the team to achieve more and more, that’s my target. All I can promise is that I’m going to give my all to represent this club.”
Despite having played one fewer league game than Manchester City, Arsenal currently leads the Premier League standings by a margin of five points.
