The stadium, which is situated at Jamtha on the southern outskirts of Nagpur, was officially opened in 2008 and took the place of the previous Vidarbha Cricket Ground as the city’s primary stadium. The International Cricket Council has praised the stadium’s features.

The first of a four-match Test series between India and Australia will be played in Nagpur, which hasn’t hosted a Test match in more than five years.
