The ongoing ICC meeting in Dubai might see the return of quadrangular events as the ECB (England Cricket Board) and CWI (Cricket West Indies) reportedly made a proposal to the ICC.

The idea having first been put forward by PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) Chairman Ramiz Raja, was apparently discussed by the CEC. “The matter was discussed by the CEC and was backed by a few boards”- ICC Member. The proposed yearly Quadrangular series, according to Ramiz Raja, will help to mitigate the mounting threats from domestic T20 leagues.

While Australia, England and West Indies were positive in their responses to Raja, India was reportedly neutral.

“I’ll talk to ganguly regarding regarding a four nation tournament. the future of cricket is in triangular and four nation competitions. T20 leagues are taking eyeballs away from bilateral cricket, of which the novelty factor is decreasing” – Raja said

Raja went on to state that quadrangular events would generate extra spice among countries and possible revamp modern cricket. While there is concern among some cricketing nations that these events would undermine ICC’s mega event, the PCB Chairman responded, “I don’t think that criticism holds any worth, as all the franchise events and other cricketing events also go on side by side”.

ICC unlikely to approve Proposal

Although there are a few nations backing the idea, the ICC is unlikely to approve this proposal. This is owing to the difficulties of organising a series between India and Pakistan. The political realities in both nations will be a significant barrier to overcome before cricket can return.
