Matthew Mott appointed England white-ball coach

Matthew Mott named head coach of England's limited-overs side.

Matthew Mott has been appointed as the new head coach of England men’s white-ball team on a four-year contract.

The 48-year-old’s appointment comes after Brendon McCullum was appointed as England’s red-ball coach last week with England going with split coaches in different formats. The position of head coach was vacant since Chris Silverwood’s sacking in February after England’s dismal performance in the Ashes.

Matthew Mott is expected to start his tenure of coaching with England’s three-match ODI series against the Netherlands in Amsterdam next month, after being unanimously selected as the standout candidate by the ECB’s selection panel.

The panel included new Managing Director Rob Key, Strategic Adviser Andrew Strauss, Performance Director Mo Bobat and Tom Harrison, who stood down as CEO on Tuesday.

Mott’s successes in limited-overs cricket

Matthew Mott has been at the helm of Australia’s all-conquering women’s team for the past seven years, winning 2 T20 World Cups and the 50 overs World Cup earlier this year. He was appointed as the head coach of the Australian women’s team in 2015.

He also guided Australia’s women to a record 26 successive one-day international wins and their recent victory over England in the multi-format Ashes series.

Mott’s success in white-ball cricket and experience of maintaining the standards in a victorious team will be valued by an England white-ball team that remains one of the best in the world despite recently losing its No. 1 ICC ranking in both formats. England’s next major tournament is the T20 World Cup in Australia this winter, having been eliminated in the semi-finals in the 2021 event in the UAE by New Zealand, while they are due to defend their 50-over crown in India in 2024.

In July 2021, Mott extended his contract with Cricket Australia until after the 2024 women’s Ashes in the UK, but the opportunity to work alongside England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan has persuaded him to leave the role he took up in 2015.

“It was always going to take something special to leave the role that I have loved for the past seven years with the Australian Women’s team. However, I genuinely believe that the time is right to play a role in helping the England Men’s ODI and T20 group continue to evolve as one of the best teams in the world,”

Mott said in an England and Wales Cricket Board statement.

“The idea of the split roles and the chance to work alongside Brendon McCullum in his red-ball role is an opportunity that I am incredibly enthusiastic about and certainly provides the right balance for my family as we embark on this exciting journey,”

Mott added.

“I’m confident that, in (captain) Eoin Morgan and Matthew Mott we have a formidable partnership that can push for more trophies in the coming years.”

England’s new managing director of men’s cricket Rob Key said.
