The identical spinners for Team India, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja achieved milestones on Friday, February 17, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, where the second Test of India vs Australia is currently taking place.
First off, Usman Khawaja, the game’s opener who was poised to make a big score, was dismissed for 81 by Jadeja in the second session of day one, giving him his 250th Test wicket, thanks to a spectacular catch by KL Rahul at covers. Later, he fired Todd Murphy and Pat Cummins.
Jadeja, who joins Bishan Singh Bedi, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Sing, and Ashwin as the fifth Indian spinner to achieve the milestone, is now the eighth Indian player to record 250 or more Test cricket-wickets. Read More: Chetan Sharma resigns as BCCI selection panel chairman
India vs Australia: Ravi Ashwin reaches 100 wickets milestone against Aus
An over after Jadeja reached his milestone, Ashwin dismissed Alex Carey for a duck after Virat Kohli caught him at slip. This gave Ashwin a century of wickets against Australia. His achievement of 100 wickets against Australia makes him the second bowler after the legendary Kumble to do so.
The 36-year-old removed Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith, two of Australia’s top batters, during the morning session by striking twice in a single over. Labuschagne was LBW for 18 and was caught behind by Smith for a duck by KS Bharat.
In the longest format, Ashwin’s achievement places him as the fifth spinner overall and the 15th player overall to record 100 wickets against Australia. Read More: Prithvi Shaw Attacked by Fans, Know Everything Regarding The Entire Incident
As of right now, Ashwin has only taken 100 wickets against one opponent—Australia—with 86 coming against England and 66 coming against New Zealand.
With the exception of Pakistan, Ashwin has faced most Test-playing nations and taken at least one wicket. He has 60 wickets against the West Indies and 62 against Sri Lanka. 56 wickets have been taken by the off-spinner against South Africa.
