The former UFC interim champion, Dustin Poirier, was one of the star performers at UFC 299. He defeated Benoit Saint-Denis, one of the brightest talents in the lightweight division. This fight was a career-defining challenge for Poirier, and he passed it with flying colors.
The reason is that Benoit Saint Denis is younger, faster, and more energetic than Poirier. Moreover, if Poirier had lost this fight, his dream of becoming a UFC champion would have ended. The results ended on Dustin Poirier’s side as he knocked Benoit in the second round.
Looking at his fight, the current UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, is impressed, and his manager hint’s another championship fight.
After the fight, Islam Makhachev tweeted:

Later, his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, tweeted:
Dustin Poirier took a huge risk tonight and came out on top and looked amazing. Dustin vs @MAKHACHEVMMA in June especially since everyone else has fights. If the UFC is good with this then Islam would be game.

Can we see Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier on the UFC fight card?
Islam Makhachev is yet to face a challenge after his fight against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294. There were talks of him headlining UFC 300, which couldn’t be possible because of Ramadan.
As a result, his next fight might be either in May or June. Looking at the current top-ranked UFC lightweight fighters, almost everybody has a scheduled fight.
- Charles Oliveira at UFC 300 against Arman Tsarukyan
- Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 against Max Holloway
- Michael Chandler might face Conor McGregor.
This leaves Poirier as the only fighter who could be completely ready to fight in May or June. On the other hand, Poirier wants to get his hands on the UFC championship before his career ends. There are higher chances that we might see Makhachev vs. Poirier on the UFC fight card.
