Tyrese Haliburton talks about the 65-game rule

The NBA recently introduced a new rule called 65 games, which is starting to impact players. The Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton is one of them and shares his view. But what is the 65-game rule? So, let us look at the 65-game rule and know what Haliburton has to say.

What is the NBA 65-Game Rule?

The rule was implemented in the 2024-24 season, and it states that players will be ineligible for major individual awards if they fail to play at least 65 games in the regular season. Major individual awards included the MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and All-NBA Honors.

It is almost 80% of the games a team plays in the regular season. This rule encourages teams to play their elite players often. Overall, if a player misses 17 games in a season, he is ineligible for major individual awards.

But this affects a player’s fitness and increases his chance of getting injured. As we all know, winning a major individual award is more rewarding in terms of money. As a result, Haliburton shares his thoughts on the NBA 65-game rule.

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton said:

“I think it is a stupid rule!”

Here is the complete statement:

“I think it is a stupid rule, like plenty of the guys in the league, but this is what the owners want, so as players, we got to do our job and play in 65 games if we can.”

In the ongoing season, Haliburton has missed 13 games, and if he misses four more, he can’t win any major awards. Not only he, but several notable players are approaching ineligibility.

  • Jimmy Butler: 15 games missed
  • Joel Embiid: 13 games missed
  • Tyrese Haliburton: 13 games missed
  • Donovan Mitchell: 9 games missed
  • Devin Booker: 9 games missed

If they miss more games, they will be out of the individual award race. Should the NBA think of reducing the number of games under the rule? Let us know your views in the comment section.
