Novak Djokovic follows Rafael Nadal’s footsteps, withdraws from Madrid Open

After losing the quarterfinal against Dusan Lajovic, the Serb admitted that he was still unsure whether to play in Madrid or not due to his elbow injury.

World No.1 Novak Djokovic, who has been struggling with elbow issues, which saw him knocked out early at the Monte Carlo Masters and Banja Luka, has withdrawn his name from the Madrid Open. His announcement came after fellow 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal also decided to opt out of the tournament.

The organizers of the Madrid Open issued a statement regarding the same. However, they did not mention any details on the Serb’s conditions. “Wishing you a speedy recovery, we hope to see you back on the court as soon as possible, Nole.” Also Read: “You Want Actual Cause To Be At The Forefront,” Andy Murray Extends Support To Ukrainians After Wimbledon Lifts Ban On Russians And Belarusians

After losing the quarterfinal against Dusan Lajovic, the Serb admitted that he was still unsure whether to play in Madrid or not due to his elbow injury.

“I didn’t feel well on the court, my legs were slow and my footwork was torrid, many missed shots, totally without direction,” said the 35-year-old after the quarterfinal loss to compatriot Dusan Lajovic at the Banja Luka event.

Novak Djokovic’s focus on his 23rd Grand Slam title

Last year, the 35-year-old reached the final of the Madrid Open but lost to Carlos Alcaraz, who had earlier defeated Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals to become the first man in history to defeat both Djokovic and Nadal in the same claycourt tournament. And after his Banja Luka exit, the Belgrade native lamented that he was sluggish on the court, claiming he can’t win against opponents who are solid on this surface. But at the same time, he made it clear that his main goal is the French Open, starting May 28.

“It’s no secret that you prepare and train for Roland Garros. The same thing happened last year, I had a very slow start to the tour and I started to play better towards the end of the tour,” Djokovic said.
