Roger Federer’s former coach Ivan Ljubicic took part in the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) debate and gave his verdict that if Novak Djokovic wins a few more Grand Slam titles, he will become the GOAT.
The Serb recently lifted his third French Open by beating Casper Ruud in the final. By doing so, he broke Rafael Nadal‘s 22 Major titles. Now he is eyeing his 24th Grand Slam at Wimbledon, and winning the title will help him tie with Roger Federer with eight Wimbledon titles.
“I feel that Novak is the most successful already, but the word ‘greatest’ implies subjectivity and personal preference. I think that’s good, to be honest – everybody has a preferred GOAT and let the discussion begin,” Ljubicic said in an interview with Sport Klub.
Ljubicic then pointed out that in other sports like football, and basketball, there’s a GOAT, which is not the case in tennis because the world is divided into people who call Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic the GOAT.
Ivan Ljubicic believes Novak Djokovic’s winning more Grand Slam titles will end GOAT debate
Novak Djokovic started this year by lifting the Australian Open title and tying with Nadal. He missed playing a couple of tournaments due to vaccination status. Then played in other tournaments and faced defeats. At the French Open, he breezed past Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final and Casper Ruud in the final to lift record-breaking 23 Grand Slam titles.
“If Novak wins a few more Slams – which seems likely at this point – then the debate becomes meaningless. If Novak ends up having five to ten more than the others, we won’t have conversations like this anymore,” he stated.
