Dominic Thiem urges the tennis fraternity to normalize discussions about mental health

He pointed out that the way having physiotherapists in a sport is normal, hiring a mental coach should also be normalized.

Former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem has advocated for mental health discussions by citing how his working with a sports psychologist helped him a lot.

I’m working with somebody, which is helping me a lot. Because you’re by yourself on the court, but you practice your tennis, you practice your fitness, you have a physio that takes care of your body, so it’s not really understandable why it’s still tough to talk about,” Dominic Thiem told Tennis Majors. He then pointed out that the way having physiotherapists in a sport is normal, hiring a mental coach should also be normalized.

Dominic Thiem knocked out of Monte-Carlo Masters

Holger Rune defeated Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Thiem was eyeing his first win over a Top 10 on clay since defeating World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the 2019 French Open semis, plus his first victory over a Top 10 player since beating the Serb at the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals at the same stage. With his defeat, Thiem is on 4-10 this year.

He kickstarted this year by facing a first-round exit against Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open, followed by losing in the Argentina Open, Rio Open, and Chile Open. He then couldn’t get past Adrian Mannarino and Lorenzo Sonego at the Indian Wells and Miami Open respectively. The Austrian then reached the quarterfinals of the Estoril Open before he was easily defeated by Quentin Halys.
