The Spanish mixed martial artist Ilia Topuria recently created history at UFC 298. He defeated the fifth-longest-title reigning fighter, Alexander Volkanovski, to become the new UFC featherweight champion. Topuria knocked out Volkanovski to become the fifth featherweight champion in UFC history.
A few weeks later, Topuria was asked about his dream fight after becoming the new champion. He opens up about his dream fight and also indirectly challenges his student to a double championship fight. By that time, you might have guessed who Topuria was talking about.
Ilia Topuria said:
“I would be happy to enter the octagon with Khabib Nurmagomedov. I would 100% defeat him!”
Here is the complete statement:
“I would be happy to enter the octagon with Khabib Nurmagomedov. He had an undefeated record of 29-0, and he has an attractive record for me. He is a worthy and honorable champion for me. I would 100% defeat him!”
Now you might have thought, How did Topuria challenge his student, Islam Makhachev?
After that interview, Ilia Topuria posted an Instagram story about Makhachev’s only loss in his MMA career.
In case you missed: Are there two UFC Champion vs Champion fights on the table?
Is the Ilia Topuria vs. Islam Makhachev double champion fight on the table?
Fighting against Islam Makhachev, the current UFC Lightweight Champion, and winning against him is a kind of victory against Khabib Nurmagomedov. The reason is that Khabib is the coach of Makhachev. Makhachev’s only loss in his MMA career came in 2015 at UFC 192.
Since then, he has been undefeated and has a 13-fight winning streak. He is the current UFC lightweight champion and has two successful title defenses.
On the other hand, Topuria recently became the UFC featherweight champion. If they face each other in a while, we might see a double-champion fight on the table.
But it seems impossible because Topuria recently became a champion and needs at least 3-4 title defenses to get a double championship opportunity.
