Lionel Messi hints at his retirement from football after the FIFA World Cup 2022 final. The Argentina captain, who scored a penalty and played an equal role in Julian Alvarez’s other two goals against Croatia to propel his country to the final, has stated that the summit clash will be his final journey with La Albiceleste.
What did Lionel Messi say?
“I feel very happy to be able to achieve this, to finish my World Cup journey by playing my last game in a final,” Messi told Argentine media outlet Diario Deportivo Olé.
“It’s many years for the next one and I don’t think I’ll be able to do it. And to finish like this, it’s the best,” added the Argentina captain.

Messi also set national records on his way to retirement
The Argentine magician is playing in his 5th and supposedly last World Cup, surpassing Diego Maradona and Javier Mascherano’s previous best of 4 World Cups. Alongside his fifth goal in Qatar, he surpassed Gabriel Batistuta as the Albiceleste’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, with 11 goals.
This will be Messi’s final opportunity to win the World Cup before retiring. He will be happy to erase the memory of finishing second to Germany in 2014 in Brazil. Thousands of fans took to the streets in Argentina on Tuesday to celebrate the national team’s sixth World Cup final appearance. Argentina will compete in the final against either France Or Morocco.
