The US Open champion Alcaraz, who was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open due to injury, overcame Serbian Laslo Djere with a score of 6-2 4-6 6-2. Since November, the 19-year-old Spaniard has not competed, and he recently lost the top spot in the rankings to seasoned Novak Djokovic.

Carlos Alcaraz is back to winning ways

Dusan Lajovic, a fellow Serbian, will be Alcaraz’s next opponent. The two had only met once before in the second round of the 2017 Australian Open, with Lajovic losing in straight sets.

Alcaraz expressed his gratitude 

“I’m really happy. It was such a great crowd and atmosphere, so I can just say thank you to all the fans here in Buenos Aires for the warm welcome that I received in this first match. I hope to keep going with this energy,” the Spaniard said.

“It’s a great feeling to win again,” Alcaraz expressed his relief. “It’s been a long time for me, no competition and no matches, just recovery. And finally, I got my first win of 2024.”

Alcaraz will face Dusan Lajovic in the next round

The 2024 Argentina Open quarterfinal matchup features Carlos Alcaraz versus Dusan Lajovic of Serbia. In the competition’s first-round match, Lajovic defeated Camila Ugo Carabelli 6-3, 6-1. In their only previous meeting, which took place in the second round of the Australian Open the previous year, the 19-year-old prevailed 6-2, 6-1, 7-5. 

The winner of the US Open will aim to improve his ranking during his first outing at the Argentina Open in an effort to reclaim the top spot in the world from Novak Djokovic.
